NLEX Expects 3% Traffic Increase During Holy Week Due to Fuel Prices
Fuel Price Hike Affects Highway Traffic Volume
Robin Ignacio, Assistant Vice President for Traffic Operations at NLEX Corp., announced that a lower-than-usual increase in traffic volume is expected along the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) during the Holy Week period. Data from last Friday and Saturday indicated reduced vehicular movement, which is attributed to the soaring prices of gasoline and diesel stemming from the Middle East conflict. Historically, traffic volume increases by 8-10% during Holy Week, but this year, a mere 3% increase is anticipated.
Traffic Forecast and Rebate Initiatives
According to Ignacio, NLEX typically sees an average daily traffic of 350,000 vehicles, while SCTEX handles approximately 80,000. These numbers have been consistently lower since the recent fuel price hikes. In response, NLEX Corp., under the leadership of Chairman Manny Pangilinan and the MPTC management, launched the 'Kabiyahe Toll Rebate Program'. This initiative, which started on March 23 and will run until May 22, provides weekly toll rebates to RFID-equipped trucks, with a slightly higher rebate for those transporting agricultural products. All repairs on NLEX have been temporarily suspended since March 26 to ensure smooth traffic flow, and free towing services are available for Class 1 vehicles to the nearest exit.
