St. John's University Hosts AI Ethics Symposium
St. John's University organized a symposium on March 25 at its Queens, NY, campus, where over 25 local high school students were introduced to the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). Students from Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter High School in Brooklyn, NY, participated in an interactive experience emphasizing the ethical use of AI through demonstrations and discussions. The event was entirely led by students from the University’s First-Year Seminar program, part of the Department of Core Studies at St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Emphasizing AI Learning and Critical Thinking
The "College Day" program encouraged visiting high school students to explore the evolutionary nature of AI and how its responsible use can enhance learning outcomes for those approaching college. Ethan Torres, a 10th-grader from New Beginnings, noted, "I learned that you cannot assume that because AI provided the information, it is always correct. You still must check it." Omar Lopez, Adjunct Professor, Department of Core Studies, organized the event. His students from the FYS 1000: Artificial Intelligence course led presentations on AI sourcing, checking for bias in AI-generated material, and how AI programs harvest information. Visiting students also learned how to use AI to identify colleges of interest and competed in interactive quizzes testing their knowledge.
