Mexico Accuses ICE of 'Systemic Failures' After Detainee Deaths
Deaths in ICE Custody and Mexico's Concerns
At least 14 people have died in ICE custody in 2026, prompting strong concerns from Mexican authorities. The death of Jose Guadalupe Ramos, a Mexican national, who was found unconscious in his cell on March 25 and later died, has sparked controversy. While an ICE press release claimed Ramos died of medical complications, the Mexican government highlighted that the cause of death is yet to be determined.
Mexican Consulate's Stance and Family's Plea for Justice
Vanessa Calva Ruiz, Director General for Consular Protection, stated that ICE authorities notified their Mexican consulate in San Bernardino last week about Ramos's death. Ruiz emphasized that four Mexican nationals have died at the Adelanto ICE facility, attributing these deaths to 'systemic failures,' 'operational deficiencies,' and 'possible negligence.' She deemed the recurrence and frequency of these deaths 'absolutely unacceptable.' Gloria Ramos, Jose Guadalupe Ramos's daughter, described what happened to her father as 'very inhumane' and demanded to know the truth, seeking justice for her father and all families who have lost loved ones in similar situations.
