California Tightens AI Rules, China Launches Global Data Body, Italy Bank Fined for Data Breach
California Tightens AI Rules for Contractors
California's Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a first-of-its-kind executive order aimed at strengthening AI protections and ensuring responsible use. This order requires AI companies seeking contracts or already working with the state to adhere to strict safety and privacy safeguards. It also mandates the implementation of measures against AI misuse, including illegal content, bias, and civil rights violations. California will conduct its own review of companies flagged as supply chain risks by the federal government, meaning firms like Anthropic that have been blacklisted by the federal government may still qualify for state contracts if California does not identify them as a risk.
China Launches Global Data Body and Italian Bank Fined for Data Breach
Across the world, China has launched the World Data Organization, a professional body that aims to support orderly data development and utilization across countries and break barriers between different national data policies. The organization has reportedly amassed more than 200 members from over 40 countries. Meanwhile, Italy's Data Protection Authority has fined Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy's largest bank, $36.41 million over a major data breach case. The regulator found that a bank employee had accessed the personal data of 3,573 customers without authorization. The investigation revealed that more than 6,600 unauthorized account access instances had taken place between February 2022 and April 2024. The authority stated that the bank's internal systems failed to detect the breach, highlighting significant monitoring and security weaknesses.
