Morocco's Tangier Port Prepares for Traffic Spike Driven by Gulf Crisis
Tangier Port's Growing Strategic Importance
Morocco's Tangier port, located in northern Morocco on the Strait of Gibraltar, is a major stopping point for Europe-bound container ships. The deepening Gulf crisis has driven an increase in shipping traffic rerouted to avoid the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, opting instead to circumvent the Cape of Good Hope. As a result, Tangier port is beefing up its capacity to manage the anticipated spike in maritime traffic. Idris Arabi, the managing director of the port, emphasized that preventing congestion is their primary priority.
Major Shipping Lines Rerouting and Tangier's Role
Major shipping lines, including Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM, announced last month that they are rerouting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope on Africa's southern tip. This change follows the Yemen's Houthi authorities' declaration of a Red Sea blockade in late 2023. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, after American and Israeli bombing of Iran, has further exacerbated the diversion of shipping traffic. This instability is benefiting African ports, with Tangier port having outperformed other Mediterranean peers in 2025, handling 11.1 million containers, an 8.4% increase from 2024.
