Iran to Unveil New Hormuz Transit System, Negotiates with Europe
Iran Announces New Hormuz Transit Plan
Iran is preparing to officially unveil a new managed transit mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz, which will involve commercial vessels paying fees to cross the strategic waterway. Ebrahim Azizi, Head of Iran's Parliamentary National Security Commission, stated that only commercial vessels and parties cooperating with Iran will benefit from this system. Iran also plans to collect necessary fees for what it calls "specialized services" provided under this mechanism. This move comes after traffic through the strait has been severely disrupted since the conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel erupted earlier this year, effectively turning the waterway into a powerful tool of strategic leverage.
Europe Seeks Iran's Approval for Hormuz Access
Iran now claims that European countries are negotiating with Tehran for permission to move their ships through the waterway. This follows reports that China, Japan, and Pakistan have already struck their own arrangements with Iran. Iranian officials have warned that shipping through Hormuz would never return to its pre-war status, and the route will remain closed to operators associated with the US-led 'Freedom Project'. These developments are raising fresh concerns over energy security, global shipping costs, and the risk of a long-term division in international maritime trade routes. Last month, Iran reported that it had already begun earning revenue from tolls imposed on maritime traffic.
