Two India-bound LPG Tankers Safely Cross Strait of Hormuz
India-bound LPG Carriers Transit Strait of Hormuz
The Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, citing the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, announced that two LPG carriers, BW TYR and BW ELM, have safely transited the Strait of Hormuz and are now moving towards Indian shores. These vessels are carrying a combined cargo of approximately 94,000 metric tons of LPG, which is expected to help meet India's domestic LPG requirements.
Vessel Arrivals and India's LPG Import Dependence
BW TYR is anticipated to arrive in Mumbai on March 31, while BW ELM is en route to the New Mangalore port with an estimated arrival on April 1. India imports about 60% of its LPG for domestic consumption, with 90% of these imports traditionally sailing through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been a war zone for nearly a month, raising concerns about supply.
Diplomatic Efforts for Additional LPG Cargoes
The Petroleum Ministry has also indicated that there are three more ships loaded with LPG cargo still stranded in the Strait of Hormuz. These vessels are carrying around 150,000 metric tons of LPG, and diplomatic efforts are underway to ensure they also get the opportunity to sail to India.
