Humpback Whale Rescued After Four Days Stranded Off German Coast
Humpback Whale Stranded for Four Days on Baltic Sea Coast
A humpback whale was discovered stranded off the German Baltic Sea coast last Monday (March 23, 2026). Stuck in the shallow waters near the Lübeck Bay coastline, rescue teams, including the German Coastguard and marine animal rescue organizations, promptly initiated efforts to free the whale. The rescue operation spanned over four days.
Coastguard Vessels Create Waves to Guide Whale to Safety
To guide the whale into deeper waters, rescue teams utilized coastguard vessels to create waves. This strategy proved successful, allowing the whale to escape the shallow area. The whale is now being escorted out of Lübeck Bay and into deeper waters by the rescue team. Marine scientist Stephanie Gross expressed pleasure that the animal managed to swim out to safety, covering the last few meters on its own. However, she noted that the question of its health status remains unknown and that they would continue to observe its movements and diving abilities over the coming weeks.
