Dead Humpback Whale 'Timmy' Found off Danish Island
Discovery of 'Timmy' and Previous Rescue Efforts
A dead humpback whale spotted off the Danish island of Anholt has been identified by Denmark's nature agency as Timmy, a humpback whale previously rescued in German waters. Timmy was first seen in early March stuck on a sandbank near Wismar, Germany. Rescuers initially attempted to dig a channel to free him, but Timmy repeatedly returned to shallow waters. German media named him Timmy after the nearby Timmendorfer beach.
Privately Funded Mission and Tracking Device Failure
After officials gave up trying to free the whale, a privately funded mission was mounted on April 28 on Poel Island, Germany. Timmy was towed into a barge that ferried him to the North Sea, and he was released off Denmark in early May. Marine animal experts had warned of his low chance of survival. A tracking device was attached to Timmy upon his release, but it stopped transmitting several days ago.
