Digital Technology to Enhance Disaster Warnings
Vietnam is actively utilizing digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, in its disaster prediction and warning systems to respond to the increasingly unpredictable natural disasters exacerbated by climate change. The adoption of these technologies is expected to play a crucial role in improving disaster response capabilities and minimizing damage. The application of remote sensing, AI, and the latest hydrological models is also enabling the creation of drought and saltwater intrusion risk mapping systems.
Vietnam's Disaster Situation and Technical Challenges
In recent years, Vietnam has experienced frequent and difficult-to-predict natural disasters such as storms, heavy rains, flash floods, landslides, droughts, and saltwater intrusion. Nguyen Xuan Hien, Deputy Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, pointed out that climate change is a major cause, and current monitoring systems, data, and forecasting technologies are struggling to keep pace with developments. Although the hydro-meteorological sector utilizes CRAY supercomputers and advanced numerical models to improve rainfall prediction accuracy, limitations in detailed, real-time data on topography, geology, and population distribution remain a challenge.
