NTSB: LaGuardia Airport Collision Caused by ASDE-X System Failure
NTSB Releases Investigation Findings on LaGuardia Collision
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released its findings from the investigation into the fatal collision between an Air Canada commercial jet and a firetruck at LaGuardia Airport. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy stated that while two controllers were in the tower cab at the time of the collision, it remains unclear who was conducting the duties of the ground controller. She noted that there is 'conflicting information' regarding this aspect, indicating it is a significant factor in the accident investigation.
ASDE-X System Failed to Generate Alert
The NTSB requested an ASDE-X system replay analysis from the FAA, which revealed that the system did not generate an alert during the incident. Chair Homendy quoted the analysis, stating that the ASDE-X system 'did not generate an alert due to the close proximity of vehicles merging and unmerging near the runway, resulting in the inability to create a track of high confidence.' This suggests that a technical flaw in the runway safety system may have been a primary cause of the collision.
