LaGuardia Airport Runway Accident and Reduced Operations

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced on Monday that New York's LaGuardia Airport would operate on reduced capacity 'for some time' following a runway accident that resulted in the deaths of two pilots. The Sunday night collision between an Air Canada Express jet and a fire truck injured dozens, including two Port Authority firefighters. The crash led to nearly 600 canceled flights, more than half of LaGuardia's daily total. Travelers across the airport experienced delays and cancellations, with many trying to get comfortable amidst the disruption.

Spotlight on Air Traffic Controller Shortages

The collision has highlighted the recurring issue of air traffic controller staffing shortages. Daniel Bubbs, an aviation expert and professor in residence at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, stated that it takes a considerable amount of time for controllers to become experienced before being placed in busy airports like LaGuardia. He emphasized the importance of ensuring current air traffic controllers are rested, not overworked, and not overly stressed, as many have been working six-day shifts and longer than their regular hours, leading to fatigue and increased potential for mishaps. However, Secretary Duffy noted that despite it taking over a year to train and place a controller in a busy facility like LaGuardia, the airport is well-staffed with 33 certified controllers and 7 trainees, out of a target of 37. Aviation safety experts say investigators will examine staffing levels and the actions of both the controller and truck crew.
