New Zealand to Provide Cash Payments to Low-Income Families Amid Fuel Crisis
Fuel Crisis Relief Policy Launched
The New Zealand government has announced a cash payment initiative for low-income families, aiming to ease financial burdens caused by the worsening global fuel crisis. The policy, effective from April 1, is a direct response to surging fuel prices attributed to the Middle East conflict. Approximately 150,000 families are expected to benefit from this measure.
Eligibility and Payment Details
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Finance Minister Nicola Willis confirmed on Tuesday that roughly 143,000 families with dependent children will receive an additional NZ$50 (approximately US$29.20) per week. This payment will be channeled through an increase in the in-work tax credit, which targets families where at least one parent is employed and neither receives benefits. An additional 14,000 families with slightly higher incomes will also qualify for payments, though they will receive less than NZ$50 per week.
