Iran Imposes Strait of Hormuz Toll, US Warns of Retaliation
Iran Imposes Transit Fees on Strait of Hormuz
Iran has reportedly begun charging some tankers up to $2 million to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, signaling a new approach to controlling the vital waterway. Iranian lawmaker Alaeddin Boroujerdi stated on state media that this toll reflects Iran's strength and marks the start of a new 'sovereign regime' in the strait after decades. He justified the measure by saying that war has costs, and thus transit fees must be collected from passing ships.
US President's Ultimatum and Iran's Stance
US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning, stating that if Iran does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, the United States will target and obliterate its power plants. This message was shared on Truth Social. In response, Iran's permanent representative to the International Maritime Organization, Ali Mousavi, told the Mehr News Agency that the strait is 'open to everyone' except Iran's adversaries. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also reiterated this policy on X, stating the Strait of Hormuz is open to all except those who violate Iranian soil.
