Iran to Respond to US Proposal Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions, Trump Optimistic
Iran Prepares Response to US Proposal Amid Strait of Hormuz Control Efforts
US President Donald Trump has stated that the US has had "very good talks" with Iran over the last 24 hours. However, words from inside Iran appear mixed. One of Tehran's top negotiators mocked the president's brief operation to guide ships through the Strait of Hormuz, tweeting that "Operation Trust Me Bro failed." Meanwhile, a source told CNN that Iran is expected to respond today to the latest US proposal to end the war. Iran has also laid out new rules for ships seeking to cross the Strait of Hormuz, according to a document seen by CNN, as Tehran seeks to cement control over the international waterway. Pro-regime demonstrations have also erupted in Tehran, showcasing the regime's continued control.
Nuclear Issues and Economic Sanctions Remain Sticking Points
Iran's expected response, a one-page memorandum, would formally declare the conflict over and trigger a 30-day negotiating period to resolve more serious sticking points. These include nuclear issues, unfreezing Iranian assets, and the future security in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump has been sounding optimistic, claiming Iran has already agreed to some sticking points. However, the sentiment from Iran is certainly more defiant. Christiane Amanpour, CNN Chief International Anchor, noted that neither the US nor Iran desires full-scale war, but both are testing each other's patience and pain thresholds. She highlighted that previous US operations to escort boats out of the Strait have not worked, leading to a worsening global economy and significant economic pain for Iran. The US's national average gas prices have also surged, adding pressure to the situation.
