Tropical Cyclone Narelle Hits Far North Queensland, Australia
Cyclone Narelle Strikes Far North Queensland
Tropical Cyclone Narelle, a high-end Category 4 storm, has struck far north Queensland, Australia, with winds reaching up to 250km/h. The powerful winds have caused roofs to be torn off and trees to fall. Residents in the remote Cape York Communities have reportedly sought shelter as the winds intensified.
Impact on Coen Township
In the township of Coen, with a population of approximately 330, locals moved to more secure brick buildings as winds picked up around 4 am local time. Sara Watkins, owner of Coen Mechanical and the Little Bush Pantry, stated, "The wind has really started to pick up, you can hear a couple of things moving around outside." Concerns remain for many older properties in Coen that have not been certified as cyclone-rated.
