China's Tangya Tusi City Boosts Economy with Immersive Tourism
Tangya Tusi City Transforms into a New Cultural Destination
Located in Hubei Province, China, the Tangya Tusi City Ruins, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2015, had struggled to translate global recognition into lasting economic growth. In response, the site has introduced a new tourism concept called the 'Tusi Lady Dream Factory,' offering immersive cultural experiences, including traditional costume photography and historical storytelling. This initiative aims to transform the ruins from a mere historical landmark into an interactive space where visitors can directly engage with the culture and become part of its history.
Local Economic Revitalization and Community Engagement
This shift has significantly impacted the local economy. The average visitor stay has increased from less than one hour to 2.5 hours, and travel photography alone generated approximately 30% of the site's secondary revenue last year. Beyond photography, the site has developed cultural study tours and immersive intangible heritage workshops, where visitors can learn traditional Tujia embroidery, silver forging, and folk dance. These efforts create opportunities for local residents and have encouraged many young people who had gone elsewhere for work to return and start their own businesses, revitalizing the local economy.
