Seoul Sogong-dong Capsule Hotel Fire: Accommodation Safety Concerns Ahead of BTS Concert
Fire at Sogong-dong Capsule Hotel Affects Numerous Foreign Guests
A fire erupted at approximately 6:10 PM yesterday at a capsule hotel on the 3rd floor of a building in Sogong-dong, Seoul. The blaze resulted in injuries to 10 foreign nationals, including a Japanese woman in her 50s who lost consciousness. Over 120 people were displaced, with 85 of them relocated to nearby hotels. The affected building, which has accommodation facilities on the 3rd, 6th, and 7th floors, is located close to Myeong-dong, making it a popular choice for foreign tourists.
'Honeycomb Structure' of Hotel Hinders Evacuation
Firefighters and police are currently conducting a joint investigation, which began at 10 AM today, to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the fire. The unique 'honeycomb structure' of the capsule hotel, with multiple people confined to small spaces and luggage often stored in hallways, is believed to have made evacuation particularly challenging. Foreign guests reported experiencing breathing difficulties due to smoke and struggling to find emergency numbers, adding to the chaos during the incident.
Heightened Accommodation Safety Needed Ahead of BTS Concert
With BTS's comeback concert scheduled for the 21st, a significant increase in tourist traffic, including foreign visitors, is anticipated. This incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in accommodation facilities. Seoul's Jung-gu District Office announced that it would begin special fire safety inspections of small-scale lodging establishments, including guesthouses in Sogong-dong and surrounding areas, starting tomorrow.
