Philippines Proposed Wealth Tax for Billionaires to Aid Fuel Crisis
Philippines Proposes Wealth Tax on Billionaires
Sonny Africa, Executive Director of the IBON Foundation, has reignited a proposal to implement a wealth tax in the Philippines. He suggested imposing a 1% tax on wealth exceeding 1 billion pesos, 2% for over 2 billion pesos, and 3% for over 3 billion pesos. Africa argued that this tax, targeting the country's 3,000 billionaires, would not be a significant burden for them but would generate substantial revenue. He emphasized that the funds collected could be used to support Filipinos struggling with the ongoing fuel crisis.
Wealth Tax vs. Fuel Tax Cuts: A Matter of Equity
Africa highlighted that while the wealth tax would have a negligible impact on the extremely rich, it would provide considerable relief to the poor and middle-class. He criticized the government's current discussions about temporarily suspending excise taxes on fuel, calling it a short-sighted measure. According to Africa, such a suspension would only lead to other tax increases to compensate for lost revenue, ultimately harming the average Filipino. He stressed that the government should prioritize taxing the wealthy, who can afford it, rather than burdening those already struggling. He pointed out that the combined wealth of the 15 wealthiest Filipinos alone is 2.6 trillion pesos, underscoring the vast resources that could be tapped.
