Chungbuk Education Official Repeatedly Installed Hidden Cameras in Restaurant Restroom, Confesses to Multiple Offenses
Chungbuk Education Official Caught Repeatedly Installing Hidden Cameras
On the 25th of last month, a 50-year-old Chungbuk Provincial Office of Education senior official was arrested in the act after a lighter-type miniature camera was discovered in a restroom at a restaurant in Cheongju, Chungbuk Province. It was revealed that the official had installed three cameras in the restroom and was carrying one on his person. During police investigation, the official confessed to multiple offenses, stating he had installed illegal cameras in that specific restaurant restroom an additional two to three times in the past, and had also attempted illegal filming in other nearby restaurants with gender-neutral restrooms. The restaurant in question is known to be a frequent venue for Chungbuk Provincial Office of Education staff dinners.
Controversy Spreads Over Inadequate Response by Police and Education Office
Despite the seriousness of the incident, police only confiscated the four seized filming devices and immediately sent the suspect official home without conducting a search and seizure of his residence or office. The released official reported to the Education Office for work as usual the next day, and the Chungbuk Provincial Office of Education stated it had no knowledge of the incident whatsoever. In response, civic groups criticized the police's inadequate response, stating it hindered evidence collection, despite the high likelihood of additional illegal footage existing given the habitual nature of the crimes. Police plan to later summon Education Office employees as witnesses to investigate, among other details, whether the official chose specific restaurants for staff dinners with the intention of illegal filming.
