Surge in Pet Abandonment Amid UAE Conflict, Community Steps Up for Rescue
Surge in Pet Abandonment Caused by Regional Conflict
Recently, a rapid increase in cases of pet abandonment in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), spurred by regional conflict, has led citizens to actively engage in community efforts for pet rescue and rehoming. Anna Zentgen, a Dubai resident, adopted Milo, a golden retriever, and Bruno, a chocolate labrador, after their owners left the UAE following regional attacks that began on February 28, abandoning the dogs.
Zentgen stated that she found a sense of purpose caring for pets after feeling helpless amidst the situation. She learned about Milo and Bruno's stories through an online post, contacted their owners, and decided to adopt them. The dogs are now well-adjusted in Zentgen's spacious home, and she expressed satisfaction that these 6-year-old senior dogs have found a forever home.
'No Pet Left Behind UAE' Active in Rescue Efforts
At the heart of this movement is the online community 'No Pet Left Behind UAE'. Founder Nikki Mehta reported opening a WhatsApp group last Wednesday night as tensions with Iran escalated, which was already full with over 1,000 participants by the following afternoon. Due to surging demand, a second WhatsApp community was opened, and it currently boasts over 6,000 Instagram followers and more than 1 million cumulative views.
Now expanded to Telegram, the community has recruited over 300 volunteers and prospective adopters. Mehta emphasized that they are collaborating with three shelters and charities within the UAE, and all activities are run remotely through the dedicated efforts of volunteers. She added that it is truly amazing to see people unite through their love for animals.
