China Warns Against Use of AI Agent 'OpenClaw'
Chinese government agencies and state-owned enterprises have recently warned employees and executives against installing the open-source artificial intelligence (AI) agent 'OpenClaw' on work devices. According to two sources who requested anonymity, this measure was taken due to security concerns. 'OpenClaw' is known as software that can autonomously perform various tasks with minimal instruction.
Data Security Concerns and Efforts to Prevent Proliferation
Over the past month, 'OpenClaw' has been actively adopted and utilized by IT development companies, major AI firms, and some local governments in technology and manufacturing hubs across China. However, central government regulators and state media have continuously warned about the risks of data breaches, deletion, and misuse. One source stated that employees of state-owned enterprises have not received instructions to adopt 'OpenClaw,' and some have even been prevented from downloading it on personal devices. Another source revealed that while 'OpenClaw' is not outright banned in government agencies, employees have been advised against installing it due to warnings about security risks.
