Cambodia Busts AI-Powered Online Scam Ring Targeting Europe
Cambodian police raided an online scam center in Phnom Penh targeting Europeans, arresting a total of 65 individuals: 8 Chinese masterminds and 57 Cambodians. They lured victims into fake investments using the 'pig butchering' scam method. They also exploited advanced technology for their crimes, including impersonating Japanese police officers with AI-generated faces and fake uniforms.
Global Damage Worsens, Cambodian Authorities Step Up Crackdown
The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that global losses from such scam crimes amount to $64 billion annually. Under pressure from the international community, including the United States and China, Cambodia has been cracking down on approximately 200 scam centers since July 2025. As scammers shifted their operations to smaller locations, Cambodian authorities stated they would completely eradicate these crimes by the end of April.
