Chinese Robot Helps Children With Nerve Disorder Stand for First Time
Robot Assists Children with SMA to Stand Up
A robot developed in China has successfully helped children suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) stand on their own for the first time. SMA is a genetic disorder where nerves connecting the brain and muscles gradually deteriorate, making muscle contraction difficult or impossible. Some patients with this condition are unable to stand independently and, in severe cases, are confined to a wheelchair or bedridden.
Muscle Atrophy and Daily Life Challenges
SMA patients experience muscle atrophy due to lack of use, which can severely impede basic daily activities such as eating and breathing. The support provided by this robot offers the possibility of independence to these children facing physical limitations, thereby enhancing their quality of life.
