Ancient China's Magical Mirrors and Elaborate Puppets
Ancient China's Technological Imagination
Ancient China harbored rich imaginations that seemed to foreshadow modern technology, with records of magical mirrors, ingenious machines, and even lifelike wooden puppets. In the Tang dynasty (618–907) text Duyang Miscellaneous Records, a mysterious stone called the 'immortal mirror' appears as a precursor to the CT scan. Found in the southwest of an unnamed land, this polished stone was said to span hundreds of kilometers. Passers-by could look into it like a mirror, but instead of reflecting their faces, it revealed deeper insights.

Beyond the magical mirrors, ancient texts also contain descriptions of elaborately moving puppets and ingenious machines. These records demonstrate attempts by ancient Chinese people to create movements akin to living beings, which can be linked to early notions of robots today. The ancients envisioned technologies beyond their contemporary capabilities, prefiguring future societal advancements through their rich imaginations.
