Apple Agrees to Share India Financial Details Amid Antitrust Probe
Apple to Share India Financials with Competition Commission
Apple has agreed to share the financial details of its India business with the Competition Commission of India (CCI), in a major antitrust case. The company has been given until June 25th to file the required documents. This development comes as the CCI continues its investigation into Apple's App Store practices. According to a confidential CCI order, Apple has agreed to submit India-specific financial information that regulators may use to assess any potential penalty.
Antitrust Probe Moves Toward Final Decision
The case stems from a 2020 CCI investigation that found Apple may have abused its dominant position in the iPhone app ecosystem. Regulators alleged that app developers were required to use Apple's own in-app payment system, limiting competition and restricting alternative payment options. Apple has denied any wrongdoing and stated it will challenge the findings. For years, Apple resisted providing financial details to the regulators, urging that a separate legal challenge over India's antitrust penalty rules should be resolved first. The CCI rejected that argument, stating it only sought Apple's India business financials and accused the company of delaying the process. The complaint was originally filed in 2021 by Indian startups and other organizations, which raised concerns about Apple's App Store rules and billing practices. This case is one of Apple's biggest regulatory challenges in India, a market where the company has rapidly expanded both iPhone sales and local manufacturing in recent years.
