US and Japan to Jointly Invest $1 Billion in AI for Science Innovation, Join 'Genesis Mission'
US and Japan Plan $1 Billion Investment in AI for Science Innovation
The governments of the United States and Japan announced a plan to jointly invest a total of $1 billion over the next five years in 'Genesis Mission', a project designed to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for scientific research innovation. Japan is expected to be the first country to participate in this US-led initiative. In early June, officials from Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will visit the US to make a joint announcement with officials from the US Department of Energy (DOE).
'Genesis Mission' to Build AI Platform and Accelerate Research
The 'Genesis Mission' aims to integrate scientific databases managed by the US federal government and supercomputing resources from national laboratories to build a new AI platform. By using AI to test new hypotheses and automate research processes, the project seeks to accelerate scientific research. Japan will contribute $500 million and collaborate in priority areas such as biotechnology, nuclear fusion, and quantum information science. Major tech companies like Microsoft, Google, and Nvidia are also expected to participate, providing cutting-edge AI models and expanding supercomputing capabilities. Japan's involvement will grant it access to advanced US supercomputers and vast scientific data. The 'Genesis Mission' is being promoted as a national endeavor comparable to the Manhattan Project during World War II and the Apollo Program.
