Philippine Senate Minority Bloc Demands Cayetano's Resignation, Citing Abuse of Power
Senate Rules Disregarded and Leadership Questioned
The Philippine Senate's minority bloc, spearheaded by Senator Tito Sotto and Senator Ping Lacson, has called for the resignation of Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano. They accuse Cayetano of continually violating the rules of the Senate, asserting that his actions amount to "impunity." Senator Sotto criticized Cayetano for disregarding Senate rules from the committee formation process and even instructing senators to boycott sessions. The minority bloc believes that Cayetano can no longer effectively lead the Senate.
Legislative Stagnation and Neglect of Public Welfare Bills
The minority senators highlighted the stagnation of crucial legislation due to the lack of quorum in Senate sessions. Vital bills directly affecting the public, such as agricultural bills, the Magna Carta for Barangay Health Workers, and anti-hospital detention bills, are not being debated because of the boycott. They criticized lawmakers for neglecting their legislative duties, stating that Cayetano is stifling the "voice of the Senate." The minority bloc urged Cayetano to attend sessions and engage in debates on all matters.
