Maternal Deaths Surge in Central African Republic's Birao Amid Border Conflict
Rising Maternal Mortality and Collapsing Healthcare in Conflict Zones
Birao, located in the Central African Republic, is just a few dozen kilometers from the Sudan border, leading to an influx of approximately 20,000 refugees fleeing the Sudanese civil war. This has resulted in a threefold increase in pregnant women in recent months and a rise in maternal death rates. Healthcare facilities are severely struggling due to aid cuts, with no midwives and a shortage of equipment and medication at the local hospital.
Dangerous Access to Healthcare and Urgent Challenges
The Central African Republic is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world to give birth due to conflict, insecurity, poverty, and lack of access to healthcare. Over 14 armed groups operate in the area, and banditry is common, making travel to medical facilities highly perilous. Pregnant women risk their lives to reach check-ups or healthcare facilities, with some not making it. Preventable diseases and issues often become critical due to the lack of timely treatment, turning childbirth into a life-threatening event.
