Karnataka-Tamil Nadu Conflict Over Mekedatu Dam Intensifies
Mekedatu Project Controversy Reignites
The long-standing inter-state political issue surrounding the sharing of Kaveri River water between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has recently re-emerged. Last month, DK Shivakumar, then Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, announced that the Detailed Project Report for the Mekedatu dam project had been prepared and would soon be submitted to the Union Government for approval. The project aims to build a reservoir across the inter-state Kaveri River at a location about 100 kilometers from Bengaluru, regulating river water flow, fulfilling the drinking water needs of Bengaluru city and adjoining regions, and generating hydroelectric power.
Tamil Nadu's Strong Opposition and Vijay's Stance
For several years, political parties in Tamil Nadu have opposed this project, arguing that it would severely reduce the flow of water to the Kaveri Delta agrarian region in Tamil Nadu. Overall, 19 districts in Tamil Nadu rely on the Kaveri River water for various purposes. DK Shivakumar stated that Tamil Nadu has no right to object to the Mekedatu project, triggering backlash from several political parties in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister Vijay met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi last week to discuss the issue. In his first public address as Chief Minister, Vijay highlighted that his government would not compromise on secularism, state rights, and river water rights, signaling a firm stance on the Mekedatu controversy.
