California Advances Bill to Curb 3D-Printed Guns
California Moves to Control 3D Printing
California lawmakers have advanced a bill that could make the state the first in the United States to require 3D printers to block the creation of firearms. This move aims to curb the growth of untraceable 'ghost guns'. The California Firearm Printing Prevention Act has passed the State Assembly and will now be considered by the State Senate.
Details of the Proposed 3D Gun Printing Restrictions
The proposal would require consumer 3D printers sold in California to include software capable of detecting firearm designs and preventing those files from being printed. Under the bill, printers would be mandated to scan design files using firearm detection algorithms before a print job can begin. Files identified as guns, gun parts, or conversion devices would be blocked automatically. State officials would be responsible for developing technical standards for the detection systems, and manufacturers would be required to certify their devices comply with the rules. Sales of non-compliant printers could be banned in California from 2029 onwards, with sellers facing civil penalties of up to $25,000 for violations.
