China Grows Giant Wheat-Rye Hybrids in Western Deserts
China Cultivates 'Triticale' in Western Deserts
Scientists in China are growing towering hybrids of wheat and rye in the deserts of its western Xinjiang region. These hybrids, known as triticale, can grow taller than some humans. Triticale adapts more easily than wheat to challenging conditions and can provide food for humans, while its stalks and leaves serve as animal feed.
High Adaptability to Harsh Environments
Kuang Feiting, the executive director of Xinjiang Maishengdao Biotechnology, stated that triticale is "tolerant of poor soil, cold, drought, salinity, and wind and sand." This resilience allows for cultivation in desert environments where conventional crops struggle. Such characteristics hold significant implications for food security and sustainable agriculture.
