Australia Sues 3M for Over $2 Billion in Pfas Contamination Damages
Australia Files Largest-Ever Lawsuit Against 3M
On Thursday, the Australian federal government announced it has initiated legal proceedings against multinational manufacturer 3M over Pfas chemical contamination from firefighting foam. The lawsuit seeks damages exceeding A$2 billion (US$1.4 billion), citing contamination at defense bases. This claim marks the largest legal action ever brought by the federal government.
'Forever Chemicals' Cause Environmental and Economic Harm
Attorney General Michelle Rowland stated that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as 'forever chemicals', used in firefighting foam, have caused significant environmental and economic damage. The lawsuit aims to hold 3M accountable for the harm inflicted by these chemicals, setting a precedent for addressing widespread contamination issues at defense sites across Australia.
