Cuba builds shipping container housing community to tackle crisis
Cuba addresses housing crisis with repurposed shipping containers
In Havana, Cuba, the government is building a housing community called Barrio Toledo using repurposed shipping containers to tackle the city's severe housing shortage. Each container is being converted into a two-bedroom home, complete with a kitchen and a bathroom. The community will also feature a children's playground and a local store. None of the 40 homes have been completed or occupied yet, as the state navigates fuel shortages stemming from the US oil blockade.
Concerns over livability amid design debate
Orlando Diaz, the site foreman, hailed the initiative as a smart solution to the capital's housing crisis, stating that the houses are well-ventilated. However, critics express concerns that the heat inside the metal homes will be unbearable during Cuba's peak summer. Despite these concerns, the project aims to provide much-needed housing solutions for the population.
