Senator Rubio: 'Negotiated Agreement with Cuba Not High'
Raúl Castro's Indictment and Critique of Cuba's Economic System
Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) referred to the indictment of former Cuban President Raúl Castro by a grand jury in South Florida, noting that Castro openly admitted to and boasted about ordering the downing of civilian airplanes. Senator Rubio stated that Raúl Castro is a fugitive of American justice and criticized Cuba's economic system as 'broken,' arguing it cannot be fixed by the current political system. He dismissed the economic discussions by the Cuban government as 'cosmetic in nature,' intended only to buy time.
Challenges in Negotiations and Regime Change
Rubio highlighted that countries surrounding Cuba, such as the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and Florida, allow their people the rights to own businesses, work for themselves, and elect or replace their leaders. He questioned why such possibilities are not available inside Cuba. However, he noted that the current Cuban regime does not seem open to these changes. Senator Rubio affirmed that the Trump administration's preference is always a peaceful negotiated agreement, but given the current situation, the likelihood of such an agreement with Cuba is 'not high.'
