Russian Electronic Warfare Reroutes Ukrainian Drones to Finland, Baltics
Russian Electronic Warfare System Disrupts Drone Paths
According to The Telegraph, Russia is using electronic warfare equipment deployed in Kaliningrad to interfere with the flight paths of Ukrainian drones attacking its territory. This equipment reportedly uses GPS spoofing technology to jam and falsify GPS signals, causing drones to lose navigational accuracy and fly towards Finland and the Baltic states. This is a major factor causing drones to receive incorrect location information and experience difficulties in carrying out their missions.
Impact on Civilian Air and Sea Navigation
Russia's electronic warfare systems are causing significant disruptions not only to drone navigation but also to civilian infrastructure. In the Baltic Sea region, problems with GPS and other satellite navigation systems are frequent, affecting air and sea operations. In September 2025, a plane carrying Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles experienced GPS signal interference while en route to Lithuania, and a similar incident occurred with a plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in the same month, where satellite navigation signals were jammed.
