US Navy Halts Taiwan Arms Sales Amid 'Iran War', Impacting Asia Readiness
Iran War Prolongs, Pressuring US Arms Stockpiles
Acting US Navy Secretary Kao testified before a Senate hearing that arms sales to Taiwan were temporarily halted to secure ammunition for the military operation 'Epic Fury' in Iran. This effectively acknowledges that the Iran War is significantly impacting US weapons inventories. The approximately three-month-long Iran War has led to the consumption of massive amounts of ammunition, dozens of military aircraft and drones, and damage to hard-to-replace radar systems and regional strongholds.
Concerns Rise Over Weakened Asia Readiness
The prolonged deployment of US naval vessels and extensive ammunition consumption are intensifying concerns about weakened US readiness in Asia. Becca Wasser, head of defense at Bloomberg Economics (BE), noted that "the rapid evolution and high tempo of US military operations mean that the US is becoming stretched thin, mortgaging future readiness to address immediate problems." This suggests that the US may be ill-prepared to address future challenges, including those posed by China. To date, at least 24 US Navy ships have been involved in the Iran conflict, with the US Navy currently leading a complete blockade of Iranian ports.
