Israel's Finance Minister Threatens to Forcibly Evacuate Khan al Ahmar
Forced Evacuation Threatens Khan al Ahmar in West Bank
Bezalel Smotrich, Israel's Finance Minister, recently announced that he signed an order to displace the Khan al Ahmar Bedouin community, escalating tensions. Khan al Ahmar is a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank that Israel has been trying to clear for years as part of its illegal settlement expansion plans. Israeli settlers have established illegal settlement outposts around Khan al Ahmar, flying Israeli flags, to provoke residents. While the Bedouin community has resided there since the 1950s, Israeli settlers enjoy water and electricity, whereas the Palestinian residents lack basic infrastructure.
E1 Plan and Separation Wall's Impact
Since the 1990s, Israeli politicians have pursued the 'E1 Plan', aiming to seize more land in the occupied West Bank and connect it to East Jerusalem and Israel. The E1 plan seeks to link illegal Israeli settlements, effectively annexing East Jerusalem to Israel. In 2002, Israel began constructing the Separation Wall, disconnecting occupied East Jerusalem from the West Bank. The Khan al Ahmar community is one of the last, if not the only, Palestinian community remaining in the E1 Zone. Evicting its residents would allow Israel to seize the land, prevent others from accessing it, and essentially divide the occupied West Bank in half. Although international pressure and media attention have previously saved the community from forced evictions, residents now fear that the eviction is more imminent due to Israel's emboldened stance.
