WHO Declares International Health Emergency Amidst New Ebola Outbreak in DRC

A new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to at least 87 deaths, with a fatality also reported in neighboring Uganda. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an international health emergency, though it has not yet classified it as a pandemic. For the past 50 years, Ebola has remained one of the world's deadliest viral diseases, claiming over 15,000 lives across Africa. The WHO declares an international health emergency when a health event is sudden, unusual, or unexpected, and actively threatens to cross international borders.

How Ebola Spreads: Strains and Transmission Routes

Ebola was first discovered in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976, and the virus was named after the Ebola River. Scientists have identified six known strains of the virus so far, with the Zaire strain being responsible for most major outbreaks in recent years. Experts believe fruit bats are the natural hosts of Ebola, though the bats themselves do not fall ill. The virus can also spread through infected animals such as apes, antelopes, and porcupines before reaching humans. Human-to-human transmission occurs through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected people, including blood, vomit, and other secretions. Traditional burial practices involving physical contact with victims have also contributed to the spread during outbreaks. Unlike some respiratory diseases, Ebola does not spread through air.

Ebola Symptoms, Treatment, and Historical Context

According to the WHO, Ebola symptoms can appear anywhere between two days and three weeks after infection. The illness often begins suddenly with fever, weakness, muscle pain, headaches, and a sore throat. As the disease progresses, patients may experience vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, skin rashes, and even organ failure. In severe cases, internal and external bleeding has also been observed. Vaccines are currently available only for the Zaire strain of Ebola, and experimental vaccines for the Sudan strain are under trial. Doctors now use antibody therapies that have significantly improved survival rates in some cases, and supportive care, including rehydration and blood transfusions, also plays a crucial role. The deadliest Ebola epidemic in history began in Guinea in late 2013 and spread rapidly across West Africa, recording over 11,300 deaths by the time it ended in 2016.
