UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Faces Mounting Resignation Pressure Amid Cabinet Quits, Potential Challengers
Keir Starmer Faces Leadership Crisis
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure to resign following recent election results and internal party dissent. Health Minister Wes Streeting resigned from the cabinet, citing a loss of confidence in Starmer's leadership, making him the first senior minister to publicly challenge the Prime Minister. In his resignation letter, Streeting stated that it is now clear Starmer will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election.
Potential Challengers Emerge Amid Party Divisions
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has signaled his intent to return to Parliament, positioning himself as a potential challenger. Burnham, who served as an MP from 2001 to 2017, is currently unable to challenge without a seat, but Labour MP George Simon has offered to resign to pave the way for his return. Additionally, former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has been cleared of tax wrongdoing charges and is also expected to join the race. Four junior ministers have since resigned, and scores of Labour MPs have urged Starmer to quit. This highlights bitter divisions emerging amongst the party's 403 Members of Parliament.
