NSW Police to Drop Charges Against Herzog Protesters
Charges Against Protesters to Be Dropped
New South Wales (NSW) police have confirmed they will drop charges against individuals who protested Isaac Herzog, the Israeli president, at a Sydney Town Hall rally. These charges were initially laid under a now-defunct public assembly restriction declaration (Pard) law. Mal Lanyon, the NSW police commissioner, announced on ABC Radio that police would withdraw charges pending a review of those laid under the said law.
Defunct Law and Impact
The Pard law was in effect during the February protest in Sydney against President Herzog's visit to Australia, and it was cited by police as the reason a march could not proceed. The law has since been abolished. While the decision affects some of the approximately 30 protesters charged, it remains unclear how many will have their charges dropped. Lawyers are advocating for all charges to be withdrawn following this development.
