Thailand to Build Own AI Infrastructure, Launches LLM Project
Thailand Pursues AI Sovereignty with Own AI Infrastructure
The Thai government, through the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry, announced on the 5th its preparations to launch a national large language model (LLM) project to ensure artificial intelligence (AI) sovereignty. According to reports from Khao Sod and other local media, the initiative aims to build an AI infrastructure that deeply understands the Thai language, culture, and social context. The project is budgeted at approximately 80 million baht and will be carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.
Developing Tailored AI for Thailand and Participating Entities
Secretary-General Pachara emphasized that establishing national AI infrastructure is a top priority for the DES Ministry, stressing the need for the country to be able to determine its own AI development direction rather than solely relying on external technology. He noted that foreign AI models may not adequately address the unique language and communication styles prevalent in Thai society. Several key organizations are participating in this endeavor, including the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), Vidyasirimedhi Institute (VISTEC), the Thai AI Entrepreneur Association (AIEAT), and the Thai AI Association (AIAT), to develop Thai-language AI infrastructure.
