France Expands Probe into Elon Musk and X Over Child Abuse Imagery, AI Content
France Expands Investigation into Elon Musk and X
French prosecutors have expanded their investigation into Elon Musk and his social media platform X. The probe focuses on allegations linked to child sexual abuse images, sexually explicit deepfakes, and disinformation generated through the platform's AI system, Grok. The Paris public prosecutor's office stated that the case also includes allegations of complicity in denying crimes against humanity. French authorities are stepping up scrutiny of AI-generated content online.
Background and Allegations of the Investigation
Prosecutors are examining a range of alleged offenses, including the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse images, the spread of non-consensual sexually explicit content, and the unlawful collection of personal data. French authorities suggest some alleged offenses may have been carried out as part of an organized group. This investigation comes less than three weeks after Elon Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino were summoned for voluntary interviews. Both failed to appear for questioning, but prosecutors stated their absence would not stop the case from moving forward.
Increased Scrutiny on AI-Generated Content
French authorities first opened this case in January 2025. The initial probe followed complaints from a French lawmaker who alleged that X's algorithms may have distorted automated data processing systems. The case later expanded after Grok generated posts that allegedly denied the Holocaust, spread sexually explicit deepfakes, and produced non-consensual AI-generated content. This investigation marks one of the most serious legal challenges so far, linking AI-generated content, social media platforms, and criminal liability.
