Renewed Search for Remains After 30 Years
The 1996 disappearance of Kristin Smart has taken a dramatic turn nearly 30 years later. Investigators are currently searching the home of Paul Flores' mother for Smart's remains. Paul Flores was convicted in 2022 of Smart's murder. Prosecutors believe Smart's body may have been buried on property owned by the Flores family. Chris Lambert, host of the 'Your Own Backyard' podcast, stated that they are conducting 'soil vapor extraction' to test for traces of human decomposition.
Podcast Credited for Breakthrough
The podcast 'Your Own Backyard' is credited with helping crack the case. The show's host shared photos of Flores' mother, Susan, answering the door on Wednesday when authorities arrived with a search warrant. Paul Flores was last seen with Kristin Smart at a party in 1996. His father was charged but acquitted of being an accessory to the murder, while his mother was never charged. It is not yet clear what new evidence led to this search warrant, but the sheriff's office will provide an update on the case tomorrow morning.
