UK Operation Ensures Seafarer Safety Amid Strait of Hormuz Blockade
UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Role
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) is an organization that tracks commercial shipping and provides security information in contested waters worldwide. It closely monitors situations off the coast of East Africa, in the Red Sea, and currently in the Strait of Hormuz. UKMTO receives emergency calls from ships in distress via a phone number on every commercial vessel's bridge, acting like a 999 service for cargo ships and tankers. Information gathered here is shared with shipowners, coalition partners, and regional search and rescue services to coordinate assistance when needed.
Hazardous Strait of Hormuz Sees Drastic Drop in Transit
A 'Hazardous Area' marked by Iranian control borders has been designated within the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran warning all vessels inside this zone to evacuate or face attack. Despite apparent diplomatic progress between Iran and the U.S., particularly since Donald Trump abandoned U.S. plans to escort vessels, zero vessels have made the transit through the Strait of Hormuz in the last 48 hours. This marks a significant drop from the previous average of 130 transits per day.
Recovery Challenges for Maritime Traffic
Commander Joanna Black, Head of Operations at UKMTO, stated that merchant vessels contact them when they feel threatened by an attack or observe suspicious activities. With more than 800 vessels and approximately 20,000 seafarers currently stranded on the western side of the Strait of Hormuz, there is a clear need for stability. Commander Black emphasized that leadership and stability are crucial for the recovery of maritime traffic, and a humanitarian evacuation may be necessary. It is anticipated that it will take weeks for the vessels to clear and months for global supply lines to return to normal.
