Iran-Saudi Diplomatic Talks Amid Middle East Tensions; US Pauses 'Project Freedom'
Iran and Saudi Arabia Resume Diplomatic Relations and Discuss Regional Cooperation
Iran and Saudi Arabia held urgent high-level talks last Wednesday regarding the security situation in the Middle East. The foreign ministers of both countries, Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, discussed the rapidly escalating situation and emphasized the need for stronger regional cooperation and sustained diplomacy to prevent further escalation. This move is seen as an effort to avoid a wider conflict. Earlier, in March 2023, China brokered a landmark agreement restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries after seven years of hostility. This agreement focused on reopening embassies, expanding economic cooperation, and triggered a new wave of reconciliation across the Middle East.
President Trump's Policy Shift on Iran and Pause of 'Project Freedom'
US President Donald Trump claimed 'great progress' in negotiations with Iran and announced the pause of 'Project Freedom', a US-led operation aimed at escorting vessels through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. This decision came after weeks of war threats and military escalation. Washington’s closest Gulf allies, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, had reportedly moved behind the scenes to block their airspace for US military operations against Iran. This resistance from key partners likely influenced Trump's decision to pause the operation to preserve US military access in the region. Iran had previously attacked Prince Sultan Air Base with missiles and drones, injuring over 10 US personnel and damaging several aircraft.
