Israeli Naval Interception and International Fallout

On April 30, 2026, the Israeli Navy intercepted over 20 vessels belonging to the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters near the Greek island of Crete. Organizers stated their mission was to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel's naval blockade. Israel confirmed the operation, insisting that the blockade of Gaza is lawful, and referred to the flotilla as a 'provocation.' Over 175 activists from more than 30 countries were taken into custody following the interception.

Mass Protests and Global Condemnation

The incident immediately sparked widespread international reactions. Large demonstrations erupted in Greece and Italy, with protesters waving 'Free Palestine' banners and accusing the Greek government of inaction. Countries including Italy, Spain, Germany, and Turkey, along with international bodies like the European Union (EU) and Amnesty International, condemned the seizure of the aid vessels. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the activists would be returned to their countries of origin and would 'continue to watch Gaza on YouTube.'
