Democrats Eye Sweeping 2028 Redistricting After Supreme Court Ruling
Supreme Court Ruling Shifts Democratic Redistricting Strategy
The recent Supreme Court ruling, which weakened the Voting Rights Act, has prompted Democrats to reconsider their redistricting strategy for the 2028 elections. Over 20 federal and state Democratic lawmakers indicate that the decision nullified previous resistance to extreme gerrymandering, opening up new states for potential redistricting. Illinois State Representative La Shawn Ford stated that "all things should be considered at this point."
Key Target States and Prospects
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries named New York, Illinois, Colorado, and Maryland as potential targets for redistricting. Additionally, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar suggested that California might revisit its maps for 2028 after drawing a new one for 2026, stating that they would not shy away from a fight. In Maryland, a bill to turn an 8-1 Democratic map into a 9-0 one was previously blocked in the State Senate, but post-ruling, Representative Glenn Ivey and others are pushing for reconsideration.
