Minnesota Welfare Fraud and Controversial Immigration Crackdown on Somalis
Large-Scale Welfare Program Fraud Uncovered in Minnesota
Federal and state agents recently served search warrants at multiple locations in Minnesota, including childcare and autism centers, as part of an ongoing investigation into a massive welfare fraud scheme. Since 2022, over 65 individuals have been convicted for abusing a pandemic-era program designed to feed children who couldn't attend school. Prosecutors estimate the scheme totaled $300 million. While the ringleader is white, most of the other defendants are of Somali descent. Federal prosecutors also announced a new wave of charges, totaling approximately $9 billion in stolen funds intended for child nutrition, housing, and autism programs since 2018.
Trump Administration's Immigration Crackdown and Controversy
On Thanksgiving, President Donald Trump announced he would end temporary legal protections for Somali immigrants in Minnesota, whom he called 'garbage.' Within days, the administration launched 'Operation Metro Surge.' This immigration crackdown initially targeted the state's Somali community, despite 87% of foreign-born Somalis living in the state being U.S. citizens. Just after Christmas, right-wing influencer Nick Sherley released a viral video alleging that members of the Minneapolis Somali community were running fake childcare centers to collect federal subsidies. However, Minnesota officials and several care center operators rejected these claims.
Consequences of the Immigration Crackdown and Public Outcry
Days after Nick Sherley's video was posted, Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino and thousands of additional immigration agents were deployed to Minneapolis. This resulted in the detention of 4,000 immigrants, mass protests, and the fatal shootings of two residents. Most of the immigrants arrested were Hispanic. The targeted crackdown on immigrant communities sparked widespread social controversy.
