Iran Adopts 'Asymmetric Warfare' Strategy
Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, announced on March 1 via X (formerly Twitter) that Iran has "studied US defeats for 20 years and learned lessons." He explained that Iran meticulously analyzed the US military's stalemates and withdrawals in Afghanistan and Iraq, incorporating these as lessons for its national security and defense. Based on this research, Iran has adopted 'asymmetric warfare' as a core strategy to confront the United States, which possesses the world's largest military power.
Iran's Asymmetric Warfare Exploits Weaknesses
Asymmetric warfare refers to strategies employed when there are significant differences in tactics, military strength, and weaponry between warring parties. It involves avoiding the opponent's strengths and concentrating attacks on their weaknesses or vulnerabilities to gain an advantage. This approach is commonly used by weaker forces to overcome stronger adversaries. Given Iran's military inferiority compared to the US and Israel, which are nuclear powers equipped with advanced weapon systems, Iran's only viable option is to target the vulnerabilities of its opponents rather than engaging in conventional combat.
